The Econologic Program preserves Brazil’s native forest and supports the local economy at the same time, with a sustainable wood production business.
The SLB group, the company behind the project, has been working in Paraná since 2008. Its innovative afforestation programme provides FSC® certified wood for furniture and construction, so saving CO2 emissions in an economically sustainable way. And it avoids the use of native species in the wood industry.
In the state of Paraná in Brazil, the law obliges landowners to reserve 20% of their land for native forest. Despite this, the rate of deforestation continues to grow, with a 35% increase in 2019. And Paraná’s Mata Atlantica is the most deforested native forest in Brazil.
The company behind this project has gone beyond the legal requirements by preserving almost 40% of native forest and planting trees on land that has been degraded by intensive agriculture.
It plants 1,100 trees per hectare, compared to 2,500 in intensive agriculture – and all in direct collaboration with the local population. Over more than 10 years, 1,384 ha of native forest has been preserved and nearly 3 million trees planted.
This programme, inspired by Improved Forest Management (IFM) methodologies, has a strong positive impact on both the climate and the population.
By contributing, you are helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as financing and supporting several social, environmental and economic initiatives. You will help SLB develop more projects with larger areas, preserving and recuperating more of the native wooded areas of Paraná state.
Not only that, but you’ll also help develop a sustainable economy for the people who live in the region, by increasing the social impact of these projects.
Everything you want to know about this project, at a glance.
