Background

Shine is a French startup that provides digital banking services tailored to self-employed and small enterprises. They founded Climate Act, a collective of small companies measuring, reducing, and transparently sharing their full scope carbon footprint to encourage businesses of any size to take action for the planet – regardless of current legislation.

“Shine wants to be part of the solution to climate change, not part of the problem. The very first step to work in this direction is to fully understand the quantity of greenhouse gas emissions we put into the atmosphere and how we can reduce it to the bare minimum. Problem

Calculating your carbon footprint can be an out-of-reach task for smaller companies. It’s difficult to know where to start, and they don’t have much time, resources, or sustainability expertise.

They can also struggle collecting information on their indirect, scope 3 emissions as solid data isn’t readily available – preventing them from tackling what’s usually the biggest part of their footprint.

“Just like most companies in the service industry, the vast majority of our emissions come from what we buy: IT, flights, and other services. This unfortunately means that a lot of our emissions are estimated because the data on our service providers’ emissions isn’t available,” says Antoine Msika, Head of sustainability at Shine.
