Challenge
The University of West London has set itself ambitious decarbonization targets, with commitments to achieve net zero in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, and in Scope 3 emissions by 2040.
The organization therefore needed to accurately calculate and record its annual carbon emissions, and plot trajectories towards its net zero goals.
The University’s Sustainability Department had been working with external consultants to log its emissions data, but found that its environmental impact ambitions exceeded the capabilities of these initial methods.
Solution
The University of West London knew it needed a digital tool to make progress on its sustainability commitments, and after evaluating several options, chose Sweep.
Sweep designed a bespoke onboarding process for the UWL Sustainability Department, providing assistance in uploading data, and assisting with the design of tailored dashboards for tracking ongoing data inputs and decarbonization progress.
Within a matter of months, the University of West London’s Sweep users had calculated the institution’s first ever in-house carbon footprint “with ease”, earning praise from external auditors for the quality and transparency of the report.
The University’s Sustainability Department say they particularly appreciate Sweep’s detailed reports and planning tools, which empower them to locate emissions hotspots and provide vital data for the stakeholders piloting the University’s Net Zero Carbon Action Plan.
Claire Willitts, Pro Vice Chancellor (Property, Accommodation & Sustainability) tells us:
“Sweep’s intuitive interface and comprehensive features allowed us to calculate our first ever in-house carbon footprint with ease. The support from Sweep’s team was brilliant, guiding us through every step of the process through its tailored onboarding and consistent support.”
“The detailed reports and planning tools have empowered us to identify areas for improvement and are informing our Net Zero Carbon Action Plan.”
“Thanks to Sweep, we are now more confident in our journey towards net zero. We are grateful for the partnership with Sweep and highly recommend their software to any educational institution looking to enhance their sustainability initiatives.”
